Green Cheek vs Crimson Bellied Conure

by Cindy

I am visiting a breeder this weekend to get my first baby conure. I have read that the crimson bellies are more easy going in temperament. Does anyone have any advice as to which breed I should pick?

I have bred and kept both, Crimsons definitely, love them.

Talk with the breeder about your concerns as they will be the best source of information since they are breeding both kinds of conures. As Tracie said every bird has its own personality, so your bird and someone else's will not be quite the same anyway.

Make sure your new baby is fully weaned and, even then, sometimes the younger ones revert back to needing to be handfed when moved into a new environment. Go over all this with breeder up to and including having them show you how to handfeed using a syringe and baby parrot handfeeding formula. I've seen completely weaned babies change back into crying, hungry little babies after they've been moved to a new home. It is also a great idea to take your bird to an Avian Vet during the first few days as birds tend to contract bacterial infections because of the stress involved in moving. If the breeder has already taken bird to Avian Vet, then you can wait and see if bird shows any signs of illness.

Your new baby will be very frightened and will need you to be patient with him/her for a while. It takes a few weeks to fully adjust to a new home and all the new people and/or pets in that home.

Congratulations on your new bird, and write to us and let us know how it's going later when you have time.

Crimson vs GC personality
by: Tracie

I have not heard this. Even 4 different GC's will have 4 different personalities. I hope someone has experience with both and can answer your question.
