He just won't chew!

Peeps the geeky parrot

I have a 10 year old mustached parakeet and he's a real sweet heart. The only thing I worry about is... he doesn't chew. For years I've given him cuttle bones, safe tree branches, cardboard, everything! He just won't chew. His beak keeps getting longer, and my mother used to file his beak down with a nail file. I just wish he'd chew so I wouldn't have to file his beak. It's really stressful for the little guy. How do I get him to chew so he can keep his beak trimmed himself?

Also, if this has anything to do with it... when he was younger we bought him with another mustache from the same clutch. As of last year we gave her to a breeder because she was bullying him and even my family! Peepers, the male still lives with me, but could his non-chewing habit be from being bullied by his sister (well-named as Captain)?

**This picture was taken when he was molting, so he's not that ratty looking. Also, notice how his beak is longer than most mustaches... it's even longer now.

Beak needs trimming
by: The Vet

Chewing may be only part of his problem. Often times the beak is overgrown because of disease or nutritional deficiency. It could also be that his beak is sensitive for some reason such as a fungal infection or other problem. I recommend that you have him examined by an avian veterinarian.
