Head tremor

by Michelle Nichols

My parakeet does this really odd thing with her head when she is close to my face. She will have the head tremors, looks like she is shaking but only her head. She leans in with her beak to my mouth, but she only does it when she is up to my face. What could that be?

Also, my parakeet has a little pimple-looking bump on the underside between the vent and the tail feathers. What is it and should i try to get the stuff out? It is not going down but it isn't getting any worse. She has been acting normal though and eating/sleeping just fine. Just not sure what it is. It doesn't bother her when i touch it though.

Thanks, Michelle Nichols

Budgie head tremor
by: The Avian Vet

Budgies have some unusual body language and this could be some form of communication. Are her head feathers fluffed when she is doing this? This could also be a health issue such as calcium deficiency, or poor quality lighting leading to vitamin D deficiency.

The pimple near her vent is not normal and should be looked at by an avian veterinarian. I cannot tell what it is from just a written description, and it could be one of any number of things such as an abscess, dried poop, papillomavirus (although not common in budgies), other viruses, etc. So you should have your bird looked at for both of these symptoms that you are describing.

The Bump

Is the Bump not the oil gland at the base of the tail? What we refer to as the Pope's Nose on a Chicken?
This is what Birds use when preening.

Head shake and bumb near vent
by: Tracie

Dr B will answer this eventually, but with the holiday and all, he might delay. You should go ahead and make an avian vet appointment Monday. Bumps on birds should always be examined by an avian vet.

I can't tell from your description if the head tremor is neurological or behavioral, sorry. Another good reason for an avian vet to examine your bird.

That is what parrots do when they want food from their parents, My Conure does it all the time... As for the bump I wouldn't have a clue... best to get it checked by a Vet though....
