Help my green cheeks tail seems to be disintegrating

by Valerie
(Chicago,Illionois)

I came home one day and noticed the end of my green cheeks tail was bent and messed up. I naturally thought she got her tail caught in the bars of her cage. A week has gone by now and her tail, starting from the tip is disappearing. She now has half a tail. She is only 3 months old and I am so afraid that there is something wrong with her. I would be devastated if something happened to her.Can someone please tell me why this is happening to my baby?

Help my green cheeks tail seems to be disintegrating
by: Linda

It sounds as if she did get her tail feathers bent and broken. Possibly she is molting, and if she still has most of her baby feathers, then she is molting and feathers will grown back in in a while. Usually during a molt, the feathers drop out and do not disintegrate like you are describing. Feathers that are all used up do get a bit crumbly when they are ready to come out.

Since we are not Avian Vets and can't really say what is happening here even if we were, my strong suggestion is to take her to be examined by an Avian Vet in your driving area. You can find them in the phone book. Sometimes regular dog and cat vets have a Avian Vet on staff, and their ads should say this. If not, call around until you find an Avian Vet. Please don't waste your time and money taking her to a regular dog and cat vet as they are not licensed or trained in the care of birds and either will do nothing and charge you for it, or will do the wrong thing, charge you for it, and your bird can be made much worse.

Let us know what the Avian Vet had to say about your little one. You'll need to have tests done for infections both bacterial and viral, plus some basic bloodwork like a CBC, Kidney function, Liver function plus Thyroid and Parathyroid. This way, any internal abnormalities should show up.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
