Thanks for writing and hope we can be of service to you.

You are probably correct in your assumption that the one on top is the male, however, the one on the bottom may also be a male. The only accurate way to tell unless the hen lays an egg is to have them DNA tested. Avian vet takes a small blood sample from each bird and sends it off to a lab who will then do the testing, and your results will be 100% accurate. While you are at the Avian vet, have both birds checked for infection and to see what kind of condition their organs are in via some general bloodwork to see how kidney and liver functions and overall condition are.

If you are planning on breeding, you need to begin to study all aspects of this laborious and expensive venture. You can find lots of information by doing an internet search on your bird type and their breeding processes. You must be prepared for every contingency when contemplating breeding because you could end up having to feed the babies if parents are not good at it. Birds who were hatched from an incubator automatically become imprinted with humans as mothers and fathers and may not know how to raise babies when the time comes. The commercial breeders do this a lot, and it ruins the birds for breeding later as they simply do not know what to do with their eggs and babies. Babies who have been allowed to stay with their mothers for a little bit will know what to do when time comes.

So get DNA testing done to sex your birds, make sure they are healthy, then get busy studying all the pros and cons of breeding. Thanks for writing to us, and thanks for the beautiful picture you posted!
