My Alexandrine parrot has down feathers all over his belly area for almost all this year. He does not pluck them and they don't seem to bother him but how can I possibly help or end this down feather problem?

Feather Plucking
by: Anonymous

The only time I've seen this is when the bird is plucking out the top feathers leaving only the down feathers underneath. It would be a good idea to follow the advice about seeing a vet as soon as is possible. If vet does not find anything physically wrong with him, then this may be from either a poor diet, boredom or too small a cage or all three. Birds get bored easily and need their toys changed out for new ones at least every few weeks(later, you can put the older toy back in, and they see it as a new one). I'd see what the vet has to say before making any changes at this point. Hope this helps.

Down feathers on chest

If the bird is not plucking then there is a health problem. Even if the bird is plucking, it could be a health problem.

Please take your bird to see an avian vet soon to get some help. It is best for your bird to seen an avian vet every year for a check up anyway.

We do have articles on our Parrot Training page. about plucking and feather chewing also if you want to read them.
