houston we have a big parakeet problem....

by emily webz
(new york, inwood, 109doughty bvl)

My female and male parakeets -sky and snowey I bought them 3 days ago. First my female bird-sky freaks out in the morning because I am removing the towel. They have still haven't eaten unless we hand feed the girl only the boy is fatty and he didn't eat. my baby boy keeps cleaning himself and I think he is pulling his feathers out. They say that happens as a result of bordness but I talk to them pet them littery hand feed them so I'm going nuts. Also I can't get them to stop flying around the room when its time to go back in. We usually have a struggle with that me and my sister. I hope you can answer my questions... Houston we have a problem.:))

P.s: my boy keeps eating his feathers too. Help me.....

You did not say where you got your birds from. It sounds like they may be sick, and if you bought them in a pet store, It is very likely they are sick and may die without medical services from an Avian Vet.

Take the birds to ONLY an avian vet as dog and cat vets are not licensed or trained in the care and treatment of exotics like parrots.

As for flying all over, you will need to have avian vet clip both bird's wings. Have them clip ONLY the 4-6 long primary feathers at the ends of each wing. Do not allow them to cut up any higher as this cripples the birds and causes chronic pain.

Bottom line is all new birds are to be considered sick if coming from any pet store and from most breeders. Taking them to the avian vet within the first few days can mean the difference between them living and dying, so do not delay any longer to have them checked out for infections and to have their wings clipped.

Thanks for writing and let us know what the avian vet has to say. Your birds will not get well without being diagnosed and treated by a licensed and trained avian vet. Give NO over the counter meds especially those recommended by pet store personnel who normally don't know what they are talking about.
