Hi! There is some training information out here on Tracie's site, and you can look on the left of page and see Parrot Training page. and Free Bird Training tips. Training parrots is a process, so hope you have a lot of time before the contest. Also birds like to do tricks that work with some of their natural moves--like hopping or hanging upside down or playing with foot toys where they can be taught to put toys in a "toy box" like that.

Birds need to be in great health too. Before starting ANY training, take your bird into Avian Vet for a checkup to make sure he does not have any infections/parasites or another internal problems that can be found with blood work. Once he is deemed healthy, then it would be okay to start very short training (PLAY) sessions of no more than 10-15 minutes each. Read and study some information here and elsewhere, and go from there. Start with something very, very simple and once bird has that down, then add a next "step" to it next day or every few days. Birds learn at different rates, so don't become discouraged when it takes him longer to understand something. Birds also have to WANT to do certain things too. Always keep in mind that any learning HAS TO BE FUN and LIKE PLAY or bird will not be willing to do it. This is true for all species. Also, ALWAYS be proud of your bird even if he only learns to do one or two things well. Positive reinforcement like, "good job!" after he TRIES to do the trick, will work. Being disappointed in him because he takes longer to learn something will not work at all. Always be proud of your bird even if he just can't quite do exactly what you want him to do. You BOTH need to have FUN doing this stuff!!!

Let us know how it goes and the very best of luck to you and your little birdy.
