How do I tell if my Blue Crowned Conure is a male or a female?

by Hunter
(United States)

Is there anyway to tell without surgical suggestions? My bird is almost middle aged, and we have no idea whether he is a male or female. We think he's a boy, but we're not quite sure. It would be greatly appreciated if you would answer this question for us! Thank you!

Determining gender of conure

Yes, you can take your bird for a DNA test. You should Find an Avian Vet or an experienced breeder to do this for you.

My preference is an avian vet, because they will draw blood, and a breeder will either cut a toenail and make it bleed or pluck a feather, both of which in my opinion is cruel.

I know you are curious, but honestly I doubt it will change anything in your relationship with the bird and it is probably best you just not know.

If the bird is a female, then the only risk is egg binding if it starts laying eggs. If you feeding a high quality pellet diet like Harrison's or Roudybush pellets for 80% of the diet and only 20% treats that include seeds, then you don't even have to worry about that.
