How do you correctly clip the flight feathers of a budgie?

Hello and thanks for writing. For the first time, I highly recommend you take you bird into an Avian Vet in your area and watch them trim the wing feathers and toe nails too is needed.

JUST HAVE THEM TRIM THE PRIMARY FLIGHT FEATHERs WHICH ARE THE 6 LONGER FEATHERS ON THE BOTTOM END OF THE WINGS. DO NOT, FOR ANY REASON, CUT UP INTO THE SECONDARY FEATHERS AS THIS CAUSES BIRDS A LOT OF PAIN AND CRIPPLES THEM SOMETIMES PERMANENTLY.

The reason I'm suggesting you take him to Avian Vet for the first trim is that someone needs to show you how to do this because if he has any blood feathers (new feathers) and you cut one, he may bleed to death. It would be a better idea to have the Avian Vet show you how to do this properly, and then you can do it after that. Also have him show you how to clip bird's nails as well. You'll need a pair of cat nail clippers for your bird, and you also need to buy styptic powder or pads and always have them open and handy whenever you're clipping birds, cats or dogs nails in case of cutting into the quick.

It shouldn't cost much just to get someone to show you how to clip the wings and nails while they are doing them. Vet Techs can usually do that for you and save an office call charge.
