How do you give antibiotic to a cockatiel

by Lori

The vet put my cockatiel on antibiotics and gave me a sirenge to use (no needle). Its small but still to big to fit in her mouth and everytime I try to give her medicine it sounds like its going into her nose. I'm afraid it's going to get in her lungs. I don't even know if she is actually getting any down her throat. Is there a better way?

There is not an easier way to give the medication at home. IN the hospital we could put a tube directly into her crop, but that is not something you should do at home. It is possible that the medication is getting into her nose, but this is not a problem. It is also unlikely that you are going to aspirate her by getting it into her lungs because the amount of medication is so small. If you have concerns, then you should go back to your veterinarian, and have him/her watch you administer the medications and demonstrate how to do it better.
