how long do you let your bird keep an unfertilized egg?

Our sun conure laid her first egg about 5 weeks ago. that egg disappeared after 2 days (we suspect our other female conure had something to do with that). Anyway, a week later (4 weeks ago now) she laid another egg. We kept the two birds separated this time, and she has been with her egg almost non-stop, literally only coming out for 2 minutes at a time to grab a quick snack, a drink of water,do her business and back in the box.

She doesn't seem to be ready to give it up. How long do we let this continue and is there anything we can do to help her?

Our avian vet suggests that you let the bird keep the egg(s) until they are not interested or they will just lay more. It bothers me that if the egg cracks and they eat any of it they will die, so I suggest you get fake eggs for future times like this.

You can purchase Solid Plastic Fake Bird Eggs at http://theeggshop.com that you can use to switch out what she lays in the future.
