How to identify the male and female rose ringed parrot

The only reliable method is DNA testing. This has to be done at an Avian Vet's office. Do not take your birds to a regular dog and cat vet as they are not licensed to treat birds and often times will either do nothing or kill the birds doing the wrong things.

There is a link on this site for help in finding an Avian Vet if you'd like to use it.

Sexing birds who look so much alike is always one for DNA testing. Since birds have to be several years' old before breeding, sometimes you'll see behaviors emerge during and after puberty that will help you. Males put on quite a display by standing tall, being stiff like a soldier and strutting back and forth on the perch while spreading their tail feathers and pinning their eyes. Hens will show themselves by bending over the perch with their butts up and their tails held high so they can show the male they are ready. The hens will also shake their tail feathers some as well. Sometimes, younger birds will do some of the displaying, but not all of it, and one can tell they are not serious.

Linda
