Humping my foot

I have had a male Sun conure for like 2 years now and one day when I was reading he was close to my foot and started humping it. Does this mean that he needs a girlfriend or is he just a weirdo?

Bird rubbing on foot
by: Tracie

No, you absolutely do NOT need to get the bird a mate and the bird is not a weirdo. Many birds stimulate themselves on things. You should discourage the bird from doing this on you by telling the bird "nooooo" in a calm low voice and return the bird to it's cage for a minute or so.

Please do NOT allow the bird on the floor and on your feet. You bring in potential bird diseases from wild birds in on your shoes for one thing. Then there are dyes in carpets and who knows what else from out of your shoes plus stuff that gets dropped on the floor that might be toxic. Also the bird could get stepped on.

There are many toxic items in our homes that kill birds all the time. Many metals have zinc in them, cardboard and plastics can have toxins in them, birds get trapped in couch springs, sticky traps etc. Please read our Toxic / Non-toxic for birds list for more information on items that are toxic to birds.

I realize you may already know all this, but just in case you or another reader needs to know I wanted to share this.
