Hurt Eyelid(CLEO)

My African Grey Parrot must have gotten into a tiff with my cockatiel parrot yesterday afternoon while i was at work. My mother was with them and they usually get along great. But, the african grey's top eyelid looks torn off. The bird seems okay, and it appears to be healing. the eye is not red, but it has a red tint in the feathers around the eye.

Hurt Bird

You need to make an appointment with your local Avian Vet as soon as you can and take your Grey in for a visit. If this wound gets infected, and I say it probably already is, your bird could lose its eye. If these birds are caged together, get a seoond cage for one of them like NOW. Anytime you see something like this happen between two birds, the end result is going to be very, very nasty and possible loss of life can be involved.

If they were just outside their cages playing together and this happened, then they need to be watched every moment they are out of cage together. Fights over toys and food are the most common, so insist that they be left in their respective cages unless you are there to referee.

Please take your bird into the vet as soon as is possible. Every day you delay could cost your bird his eye or his life. An eyelid being torn off is not a minor injury--this is a major injury that needs an Avian vet's immediate attention.

Bird with hurt eyelid
by: Tracie

Dr B suggests that you take your bird to an avian vet for an examination. If the wound gets infected it can get serious very quickly.

You should seriously consider keeping these birds separated unless they are being supervised.
