I got two love bird and I think they are sick.

by GS
(Baltimore, MD)

One love bird (Lucy) puffs her feathersoff and walks sluggish. She, churp to making a purring sound and it to quit. I've notice red spots on the gold feather. The nesting box smells and it's half filled with there feather and two eggs.

The other bird is (Ricky)is always charging the Lucy. When eggs are layed; eggs have never hatch.

What can I do for The Desilu Show.

I got two love bird and I think they are sick.

Anytime you think your birds are sick, they probably are, and this means you have to take both of them to an Avian Vet in your driving area for an exam, diagnosis and treatment.

The female could be eggbound, and she will die if left untreated, so please do not delay getting both birds to an Avian Vet.

As for the eggs, take out the nest box and FORGET ABOUT IT FOR A WHILE. Your female may be too young to have been bred, and egg binding is a common occurence in these cases as the female is not old enough and developed enough to pass eggs easily.

So, to recap, get both birds to an Avian Vet as quickly as you possibly can, take out the nest box, separate the two birds into their own cages. In the wild, sick birds are routinely either killed or driven away from the flock because sick birds bring predators. The male will end up killing your female if you don't get her out of there immediately. Keep them separated and throw away any more eggs she lays in the bottom of the cage to keep her from eating any of them and getting poisoned.I MUST STRESS THAT IF YOU HAVE SEEN BLOOD, THIS IS AN EMERGENCY, AND ANY DELAY CAN COST YOUR FEMALE HER LIFE.

Before doing anymore breeding, you need healthy birds to start with and these two do not sound healthy. You also need to have them on a high quality, organic pelleted diet, and they need to be on this diet for at least a year BEFORE any more breeding takes place. Keep both birds in their own cages and get them healthy before even thinking about breeding.

Let us know what Avian Vet has to say, and your female is in dire need of treatment right away. The male needs to be checked out as well and birds separated. Tracie carries several of the better organic pellets out here, and you need to have healthy birds before even dreaming of breeding them again. It will be a year or more before they are ready for any breeding if even then. Once birds get down and sick, it takes a long time to bring them back to health, so this will take time.

possibly sick birds need a vet
by: Tracie

Dr B can not help or diagnose illness over the Internet. You need to take your birds to see an avian vet for diagnosis and treatment soon.
