Zinc is Poisonous
by: Linda

YES IT IS POISON, GET ALL THE PAINT OFF THE CAGE IMMEDIATELY AS ZINC IS AS BAD OR WORSE THAN LEAD!!!!

YOUR BIRD WILL DIE IN A CAGE PAINTED WITH EITHER ZINC OR LEAD IN IT. Basically, you cannot paint a bird's cage yourself as there are no safe paints on the market for bird cages except the powder coat paints, and you have to make sure they are lead and zinc free(either manufacturer has to have the reports on file for you to read or you would have to have it tested). If manufacturer of the powder coat paint is not willing to show you a testing on their dry paints, they are full of lead and zinc. Powder coat also has to be baked on, so you have to take cage to a place that powder coats cage wire. They will strip your present cage down to the base metal, and go from there. It will be cheaper to buy your bird a safe cage to live in.

The cage you have painted is toxic to the maximum state. Buy a new cage, and throw that one away if you cannot strip it down to the base metal and have it powder-coated. As I said before, it will be cheaper to buy a new cage. Minor scratches and scrapes can be fixed using a two-part epoxy and has to be done outside and left outside for at least a week or more to air out the glue. Once glue is dry and aired out, it is safe for birds and will keep cage from rusting out.

In future, ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE you do something like this. Your bird's life is in your hands, and he will die in this toxic mess you are now calling his cage.

Thanks for writing, and wish you had done it BEFORE you painted it and made it a toxic waste dump.

by: Tracie

Yes, if the bird bites the bars or licks the bars. Zinc poisoning will kill your bird.
