Feeding baby birds
by: Anonymous

Sometimes, babies are used to finding their food in low bowls or dishes at the bottom of the cage. They're not accustomed to climbing up to side of the cage to find mounted bowls. Try placing a shallow dish of food that your bird is used to at the bottom of the cage. Do the same with the water. Then, gradually he will investigate other areas of the cage and find food there too in the higher bowls. Be sure to check on his food often throughout the day to make sure he hasn't pooped in it. If so, you will have to change it for fresh food.

First, call the previous owner and ask them about this. You need to have dishes set where it is comfortable for bird to eat from them. Also, you need to be feeding same kind of pellets previous owner used. If they are not organic, you will need to gradually change them over to organic pellets like Harrisons found here.

The other issue is your bird may be ill, and we always recommend an exam by an Avian Vet ONLY within the first few days. Your bird will die without food and water and can go only a day or two without eating and drinking before kidneys fail and bird dies. Get him to an Avian Vet right away.

Ask previous owner how they had things set up for him and how much he was eating there. The possibility is that he was already sick, and they failed to have him examined, diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet choosing instead to "get rid of him" which is what a lot of people do. So, taking him to an Avian Vet is not a choice, but is mandatory to make sure he does not die from a neglected infection. Infections do not go away until diagnosed and treated by Avian Vet. Give him NO over the counter meds especially those found in pet stores because until you know what kind of infection he has, it cannot be treated.

Nine week old bird not eating
by: Tracie

This is very serious. You need to take the bird back to the person you got this from. If they were hand feeding it, it may have reverted back to needing to be hand fed due to the stress. If this is not the case, then THEY need to take this bird to an avian vet ASAP.
