Bald spot under wing

Bald spot under wing

I found an Indian ring neck parakeet who is very energetic and playful, however he is bald underneath his wings and part of his neck. I have taken him to an animal vet as in my country we do not have avian vets, he thinks that he has mites and given him Promectine which is to be mixed with his drinking water for 48 hrs and a 2nd dose 10days later. I have started the 2nd dose but it seems to be getting worse. He is always scratching and itches but yet still whistles.

I have asked my vet if this could affect humans but he said no. We have had some bites on our legs which seem to be mosquito bites but are very itchy, looking up on the net it seems that bird mites could be transferred to humans which are similair to mosquito bites but take longer to heal.

Bald under wings

This is not French Molt, but you could have your bird tested for viruses that cause lesions like this such as PBFD, Polyomavirus, etc. Be sure you are feeding a good diet of 80% pellets with healthy treats. Keep then humidity up in his room, bath 3-4 times weekly, use the aloe spray, and keep his cage clean. But you need to find a veterinarian that can diagnose this disease. Breeders are not going to be able to help you.

INDIAN RING NECK PARAKEET
by: IVANO ARCIDIACONO

Thanks for your reply, since then I have confirmed that thy are not mites and the bites we have found on us are from fleas from a cat which we have sorted out. We have no avian vets in my country, I have taken him to a parrot specialist who breeds them and thinks that it might have French Mault. The parakeet is healthy, he chirps, plays and does anything that a healthy bird does, he is also growing some new feathers on his neck but not his back. It seems to be spreading to his chest and wings. I am spraying him twice a day with an aloa vera spray. What is the best diet we could give him? I have 2 budgies which I have given to someone for the time being, is it safe to bring them back ? I do not now what to do next.

Parakeet needs avian vet
by: The Avian Vet

This is not mites or any other parasite. It is however likely a medical condition and needs the attention of a qualified avian veterinarian. This is not something you can treat at home. But you can help by feeding him a good pellet diet, bathing him 3-4 times weekly, giving him full spectrum light, and mist him with Avi-x Bird Rain daily. He needs more specific medical attention than a non-avian veterinarian can provide.
