We had an accident in the house about 6 weeks ago when my African gray bit off one of my budgies toes. We went to the emergency vet and had the toe cleanly amputated. We've done the follow up trips to the vet and given him all his mess. The vet says he's fine but he doesn't like putting weight on his injured foot. Is this going to be permanent? Will it get better? Should he be using the foot like normal by now? Is it time for another trip to the vet?
Thank you for your info. However, the very next day, he started trusting the foot again. Now he's an upbeat, healthy bird with an occasional misstep because of assuming he's still got that toe. And I think thats about as good as he'll get. It was right at six weeks too. Thanks for the advice, though.

You should take him in for a recheck. Toe and foot injuries are very painful but should be useable after 6 weeks.
