international travel with a conure

by Annie
(Albuquerque )

Hello! A parrot rescue society by me is closing (Albuquerque, NM) and I would very much like to adopt one of their conures (a Patagonian Conure). My only issue is that I'm a researcher and will need to travel to Brazil for a year starting January 2013. Will I be able to take her with me safely?

When asking your questions, please make sure you can put your parrot into a carry on travel cage made for birds so bird can either be put above or under your seat. Birds cannot travel in the cargo hold as it is very cold and has very little pressure.

The other and very important issue is if this bird is healthy enough to travel like this at all. You'll need to have a health certificate from a licensed Avian Vet, and any infections or other physical problems will have to be treated before bird is fit to travel. These health certificates are NOT optional. Before a country will allow a parrot in, it has to have a very recent health certificate that shows bird to be healthy in all ways. If this were me, I'd get right on all that is required of you. You'll also have to do exactly the same procedures before coming back to the US with your bird, and an Avian Vet is the only vet qualified to do an exam on your bird and issue a certificate of health.

I suggest you visit www.world-pet-travel.com and ask them about this. They are experienced with helping people transport their pets all over the world.
