Introducing new bird to present African Grey

by Starsound

Hello everyone,
We have an African Grey that lost his Buddy about 7 months ago. Now he is very vocal, moves around on the floor much more than he ever did before, his attitude has changed dramatically. We believe that he is lonely. We would like to get him a mate but have a lot of concerns about how Pete will react to a new bird in his surroundings.

Would it be wise to introduce them outside of Pete's territory, like you would with dogs? Or would you keep them separated for quite a while.
Thank you for any help that you can give.

Introducing a new bird to AG
by: Tracie

I am sorry to hear of your loss, both for you and your bird.

You are correct about introducing them in a neutral place. You also need to recognize that they may never like each other. Hopefully they will become great buds, but this is always a possibility.

Because the birds may never get along, make sure you are bringing the bird home for you and your family, not the other bird. This bird will need your commitment and love for the rest of your life, likely.

I hope everything works out for you and the birds. Please post your story about this once things settle down. Others will be interested to know your experience. You can post a picture and your story at
