Is beeswax harmful to birds?

by Rick Mills

My wife makes candles every so often and when she pulls out the block of beeswax our bird goes nuts!

I don't know if it's the honey flavor or the consistency, but we give her a tiny bit of it once in awhile and goes nuts for more.

Is it harmful?

I mean, it's not something we would feed her, but seems like a treat every so often - IF it's not harmful.

Any advice?

Thanks Dr B!

We'll let her sneak around while mom is cleaning up the beeswax shavings :)

Is beeswax harmful to birds?
by: Rick

Yes, we clip her wings ourself - she is a very inquisitive bird and we don't let her out without someone in the room. We've read all the warnings about chocolate, coffee beans, etc, but haven't found anything on beeswax - once again, we wouldn't feed it to her, but she likes to help sometimes and ends up snatching a few stray pieces here and there (sneaky).

A few Christmases ago we hung a stocking to close to her cage and found her head first inside it looking for the forbidden chocolate :)

Thanks for your reply!

Beeswax and birds

I would think this is not a good idea, but I am asking Dr B to answer this for you. He will eventually post his answer.

If your bird is flying free around your house, please be aware that if he/she licks or chews anything toxic it may die. I have known one bird to die from playing with a statue on a shelf and another bird died from landing on a picture. The picture fell off the wall, the bird fluttered down and the picture fell on the bird.

Your bird may already have it's wings clipped, but just in case I wanted to encourage you to make sure you have a specific bird room, clean of anything harmful, before allowing your bird free roam just in case.
