Is it safe to pet a cockatiel on the back?

by andrea

Hello, I tamed my cockatiel and he/she ( im not sure what gender yet) lets me pet its head, neck and body... but i read online that you should not pet the back of the bird. So my question is what happens if you pet the back? i,ve been petting it's back and it seems fine but im alarmed that this is not safe. It said that it can cause a female bird to lay an egg? and im not sure if i have a male or female bird. Thanks so much.

Petting a bird down the back
by: Tracie

Petting a bird down it's back is not dangerous, but it is not recommended because it does encourage breeding behavior. Hopefully your bird is eating Harrison's or Roudybush pellets, because birds that are on a high quality pellet diet do not get egg bound.

If you need to convert your bird to pellets, please read our Switching Birds To Pellets article written by an avian vet.
