Is my Baby Budgie ill?

by Amy
(Lincolnshire)

Hello. i got Billy the budgie 5 days ago, and he is 10 weeks old on Saturday. I have been spending a lot of time with him and he will happily perch on my finger, or go to sleep in the palm of my hand. However, he seems to cling to me most of the time when i'm trying to put him on the perch, and when he gets onto the perch, he jumps straight off and goes to sleep on the floor,a nd this is where he spends most of his time.

I havent seen him drink much, once in 5 days, and i havent seen him eat that much, but he eats his millet spray off the floor a bit. He seems very subdued and sits in the corner of his cage asleep. When you offer him any food out of your hand, he will refuse to eat it. He hangs his wings low and he seems to stretch and clean himself a lot.

I havent let him fly around yet, because i'm trying to get him used to human contact. I just wanted your opinion before i concider taking him to the vet. Is there any special treats i might beable to tempt him with? Thank you!

Baby budgie possibly ill
by: Tracie

Babies do sleep a bit more than older birds, but it is hard for anyone to tell you over the Internet if your bird is sleeping too much or if it might be sick.

I don't know what it is like in the UK, but here in the US the big pet store chains purchase birds from bird farms and most of the birds are unhealthy and come from unhealthy parents so they are sick before they even arrive at the stores. If you didn't purchase your bird from a breeder that takes their birds to an avian vet and makes sure their birds are healthy before selling them, then it is likely that your bird is sick.

Please Find an Avian Vet for your bird to rule out illness. Please read the articles on our Parrot Training page also, especially the one about switching your bird to pellets. Your bird will live a much longer, healthier life if it is eating a healthy pellet diet. An all seed diet will cause fatty liver disease.
