Is my budgie alright?

by Nora May

hi I was just cleaning my budgie and I noticed this kind of crusty layer under and slightly around the bottom part of his beak. I have a male budgerigar that I got about 2 months ago, he's still scared of me and training him hasn't been easy.

He climbs around the walls of his cage a lot I have noticed, trying to open the door or escape using his beak so I'm thinking he may have injured it by doing that? Under his feathers also look quite red when he's just been cleaned. Is this normal? I can't help but be concerned?

He sits on his perch with his back to the door, and only stays on my hand for a few seconds when I'm taming him. I can't help but feel like he's miserable, and there's nothing I can do. I've considered getting him a companion, but I hear it's very difficult to tame your budgie if they live with another budgie especially one that's not tame. Please help asap!

Bird with crusty stuff around beak
by: Tracie

Your bird could have mites or an infection, so if the bird has crusty stuff around the beak, that isn't food, you should take the bird to an avian vet. (Don't use mite treatments and protectors from pet stores, they are toxic, and you don't want to treat a bird for something that may not be wrong with it either.)

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet.
