by dave
(lancaster pa)

my 20 year old female double yellow head is extremely hormonal. will not eat. scratches her beak franticly on the cage and the beak is more purple than sand colored. took her for blood test it was fine.elevated calciem. she only will eat things that are not goo for her. this happens every spring. she is in the same room with other birds. 1-male blue front 1 male double yellow front 1-female blue crown conure 1-female eclectus. she is generlly fed roudy bush and fresh fruit and veggies. when she gets like this she wont eat anything but meat cookies cakes buttered vegies ect. she is on cipro medicam milk thistle and diluted gatorade as per my vet. he even had me come in to give her a hormone shot to knock it out. nothings working can you help. she was 635 grams before this happened this year last week and is now down to 595 grams. i cant keep feeding her peperoni chicken buttered vegies ect.

Bird eating junk food
by: The Avian Vet

The only way I will be able to help is to see her lab results, get a more thorough history and a current status. I am happy to provide consultation if you would like to set up a phone appointment. I will need all of this information before I can set up the appointment. (Use contact form on this site)

Stop giving her all of that junk food that is very bad for her. Only allow her access to Roudybush pellets plus fresh fruits and vegetables. She cannot eat what you do not give her.

I feel there is more going on than just hormones.

EATING
by: DAVE

THE GATORADE IS DILUTED WITH WATER AND IT IS TO KEEP HER HYDRATED. SHE ONLY GETS .3ML TWICE A DAY WITH HER MEDS. THATS ABOUT 3-DROPS. I GOT HER FROM A PERSON WHO PASSED AWAY. SHE IS APPROX 23 YEARS OLD. I HAD HE R FOR ONLY 3 YEARS. HER NORMAL DIET IS ROUDY BUSH,APPLES PEPPERS , GRAPES , CARROTS, BROCCOLI,SPINACH, PARSLY , MANDRIN ORANGES, CRANBERRIES. AND NO YOU DID NOT COME ACROSS THE WRONG WAY.

Bird eating terrible and itchy
by: Tracie

Dr B will eventually answer this, but I have some comments.

I am in complete shock that you write your bird will not eat healthy, when YOU are the one giving the bird food!!! YOU can choose to NOT feed your birds unhealthy food and then they will not eat unhealthy food. If your bird had never been fed unhealthy items before, they would not even know they like it.

You are in complete charge of your bird's diet. As long as your bird knows that pellets are food, they WILL eat them when they are hungry. All you have to do is ONLY provide pellets until they eat them.

I am hoping the vet you went to is not an avian vet, because I have a hard time believing an avian vet would suggest Gatorade for a bird. It sounds to me like you need to find a good avian vet to help you get your birds healthy.

I hope I am not coming across too harsh, I just can't understand why you would feed your bird anything bad for them, ever. I once had a friend that claimed her child would only eat hot dogs. I asked her why she purchased hot dogs then? Don't have them in the house, and I guarantee the child will eat something else.
