Itchy butt bird

by Christine V
(St. Petersburg, FL 33771)

Do you know anything about our avian friends having trouble with a distressing foliculitis type problem? My lovebird of 12 years began plucking out immature feathers around his rump area. He will pluck an area till it almost bleeds. I have taken him to the vet but nothing seems to help cure the itch. Any ideas?

Lovebird polyfolliculitis
by: The Avian Vet

Lovebird commonly exhibit polyfolliculitis. It is possible that your bird is PBFD positive. I recommend testing for beak and feather disease. But you can treat the polyf with anti-inflammatory drugs. It is not always successful.
