kakariki sneezing and making funny noises

by Patricia Wild
(Peterborough, Ontario Canada)

My 7 yr old kakariki is constantly sneezing and making funny noises. Sometimes I can hear her breathing and she seems to be whining alot. Is there anything I can do or feed her if she is sick to build her immune system up? It almost seems like she is losing her voice. She has always been very healthy, She still looks healthy but sounds coming out of her are not normal. What can I do for her?
Thanks for you help

Jade passed away today @ 8:30am
by: Patricia W

We took my little girl to the vet and they gave her an antibiotic needle and sent us home with antibiotics but her breathing got much worse really fast. I think her little heart couldn't take it and that is what caused her to pass away. She will be cremated and brought home to sit on the fireplace hearth were she always loved to play in the wreath above.

Thanks for your help and info!

Bird sneezing
by: Tracie

If your bird has a viral or bacterial infection, then you don't have time to boost her immune system, you need to get the proper medication right away. Until you know the cause, there is no suggested treatment.

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.

If your bird drinks water from a dish, it is possible that it has a bacterial infection. Water that sits for more than 4 hours, and has the potential for the bird to bathe and leave food in the water after eating, will have high levels of bacteria. It is suggested that birds drink from a water bottle do greatly reduce the possibility for bacterial infections.

Once the bird is well, make sure the bird is eating a high quality pellet diet to keep the immune system healthy.
