Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Avara is 19 years old and very sweet.

Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Picture / Photo

Even though Rebecca allows her Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo outside and around dogs, it is NOT recommended. There are many bird diseases and predators that can kill a bird outside.

Also, even though a dog is friendly, if startled it may bite and then realize "Oh no, it was just the bird." It will be too late then. The dog may not have meant to kill it's bird friend.

Rebecca's Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Story

Avara is 19 years old and sweet when she wants to be :-). She's bonded to me, so every once in a while she will chase my husband around, not letting him get near me.

If I leave a room, she'll follow, walking on the floor calling to me :-). She's highly attached, probably because she's only put in her cage at night and when I leave the house--and I don't work, so I'm here all day.

She loves our peach tree out back, rips it apart and will climb all the way to the top and just screech her happiness.

She's for the most part newspaper trained. She HATES dogs, but is used to mine and even chases them around...but if a new dog appears, she'll freak out and start making a "barking" noise.

She can't really talk, but you can understand she's trying to say "pretty bird" and "yeah" (she'll "talk" for a long time and then stop and I'll say "Oh yeah?" and she'll nod her head and say "yeah"). She sings in the shower with me.

She's a joy for the most part, but with all "two year olds" there can be annoyances. The people who had Avara before me (had her for 18 years and then got married and had a baby, so it was bye bye Avara...sad) would feed her anything in the world and let her eat what they ate every time...I don't...mainly because a lot of what I eat, she can't, but she hates that.

She'll make an "I want" sound when she sees me eating, and when she realizes I'm not going to give it to her (even if I give her a carrot, or fruit, she wants what I'm eating), she'll get more angry until she's screaming. Can't seem to get her out of that, but doesn't mean I'm about to give her any chocolate cake either!

She'll learn sooner or later, I've only had her for about 2 months...wow, I can't believe it's been that short! My favorite is when she'll scream out of nowhere and then will start laughing...as if she knows she scared the #*%! out of me. :-)
