Lethargic female cockatiel

by Heather

Our one year old female cockatiel seems as though she is very tired all the time and is not eating like she used to. She seems very miserable and her breathing is heavy. A few times a day she will go down to the bottom of her cage for 5 minutes or so but does not seem to be straining as if she wanted to lay an egg. What can this be and is there anything we can do to help?

Please take her to a vet. These are signs of of illness. Birds hide their illness until they are seriously sick.

Heather YOUR BIRD IS ILL AND NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO AN AVIAN VET IN YOUR AREA. Your bird is very sick, and she will NOT get better until her infection is diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet. Be sure to take her to an Avian (Bird) vet because dog and cat vets are not licensed to diagnose and/or treat birds as they have not put in all the extra time in learning all the unique physical traits birds have.

Please do not delay getting your bird help because she will die if left in her present state. Once they stop eating, this means it has become an EMERGENCY SITUATION WHERE YOUR BIRD'S DEATH WILL FOLLOW SHORTLY.

Thanks for writing and keep us posted on what vet said about your little bird.
