Lethargic parakeet

by Sandy
(OH)

My parakeet's droppings are light green and white semi solid. He has a good appetite and is drinking water with vitamins. He has a seed diet and will eat lettuce. I've tried fruits and veggies but he won't eat them. He is lethargic and seems weak. He falls occasionally when going to cup. He sleeps a lot and does not talk or come out. Please help me get him better. Any suggestions will be appreciated. This has been going on ~ one month.

Stop the lettuce, also
by: CHaydel

I'd stop the lettuce, also. The Internet can offer good diet suggestions. Too much lettuce is not good. Get the carrot, corn, pea mix. Heat up and then cool down. Add a small piece of apple and give him time. Break a piece of almond or walnut. Pin these thru the cage with a wooden clothes pin. This will get his attention. Let him see you eating it.

Parakeet with poor diet
by: Tracie

The vitamins and seed diet are making your bird sick, most likely. You are probably just feeding according to what a pet store wants to sell you, but it is a poor diet. Like feeding your child twinkies and giving vitamins to make up for it.

Stop giving vitamins right away, I killed my first bird by adding vitamins, they caused organ failure.

Your bird needs to be converted to a high quality pellet diet, and that can take some time. (Sometimes they convert within days, some take a year.)

Please read this Switching Budgies To Pellets article for instructions on converting your bird.

Because your bird may be sick, or have a disease, please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
