liver disease

by Sia
(Montreal)

Buddy, my budgie has liver disease and he's losing the use of his legs. Plus he's out of breath a lot. I've brought him to the vet and she gave him an injection to kill the bacteria in his liver but he's still not getting any better. He's lost his voice too and he's been really depressed as well.

He's not usually like this at all, he's usually such a happy bird and he's always so cheerful and he usually talks a lot too. So my question is how can I make him better? Is there any way he'll be back to himself? To cure this liver disease or make him live as long as possible pain-free? Will he get his voice back? Thank you.

Maybe not liver disease
by: Tracie

Liver disease rarely causes lameness in legs. I think that your budgie has a different problem than liver disease. Did the vet do any diagnostics such as x-rays or blood work? If not, then diagnostics will be necessary to determine the cause of the symptoms and determine an appropriate treatment plan.

Bird with fatty liver disease

Did you take your bird to an avian vet? If your bird doesn't have an infection, I don't know how the shot will help at all. Dr B will eventually answer your question, by the way.

What likely caused this disease is an all seed diet. Did your vet suggest a pellet diet? Your bird should be eating a high quality pellet like Harrison's or Roudybush pellets.
