Living With Two African Greys

Kroets and his rescued companion

Kroets and his rescued companion

I have always wanted to have a parrot...but with two lively boys and a daughter, I had more than enough on my hands already.

Now that the kids have grown up and left home, I finally made this wish come true. We bought 'Kroets' from a responsible breeder, who allows his birds to nest and breed 'the natural way'.

Kroets is a sturdy bird and an excellent talker. He is fond of my husband. As for me, he just accepts me, sits on my hand, but doesn't want to be cuddled by me.

After a year or so, we thought it a good idea to have a second bird, as a companion for Kroets.
We got our second bird from a rather strange family. They had 2 birds, but wanted to get rid of the smaller one.

When we went to their house to see this animal, it soon became clear to us that they were mistreating these birds, locking them in a cage that was too small, shouting at them and even beating them ...Both birds were looking nervous and their feathers were a mess...

The bird they wanted to sell, immediately sat on my hand and was completely at ease...so I bought it although I knew that it would be hard to change it into a happy and healthy bird...

After a short time of adjusting, both birds accepted each other. The smaller bird has recovered and his feathers look well. He always wants to be cuddled and talked to...by me that is! He is still terrified of other people, including my husband..I guess that this is a remainder of his former 'home'.

I am so happy having given in to this long-time wish of mine...it is great to have these 2 wonderful birds. I don't mind the mess they make (believe me, they do make a mess...). They brighten up my day!
