Loosing Feathers

I have one parakeet and have had it now for almost 2 months. I am a little concerned because he seems to be scared of me so I can;t hold it or let it sit on my finger. Today I looked at him and noticed that on his chest he/she has lost a lot of feathers and you can see it's skin...is this normal?

Losing Feathers
by: Linda

Hi and thanks for writing. Your bird needs to be seen by an Avian(Bird) Vet in your driving area. New birds should always be taken to Avian Vet in the first week because most are already sick with some kind of infection. Birds in pet stores are sick because of poor breeding, poor feeding, moving around and lack of proper care once they get to pet store. An Avian Vet is needed to make sure your bird is not sick, which I almost guarantee he is.

Once he has a clean bill of health or has finished meds to make him well, you can then start learning to train your bird. Do no training and limit play times until you have taken him to an Avian Vet because sick birds get sicker as time goes on and do not feel like playing or learning new things.

bird with bare spots
by: Tracie

It is never normal for your bird to have bare spots. Your bird will molt, but you will not see where the feathers came out.

Dr B can not help you, because he can't examine your bird. Please read the Feather Damaging Behavior article for more information.
