Lorikeet is pooping red!

Hi there, my boyfriend's feisty lorikeet occasionally poops red. We've taken it to a general vet who said not to worry about it and it did go away for a while, but today it's very red again and not liquid at all.

I feel that I should be worried and there are no aviary vets in the area

What are you feeding your lori? My lori poops colors accordingly to the colors of his fruit and smoothie colors. You should take him to the vet just to check but this is my experience with my bird.

internal bleeding
by: Alex

Your bird appears to be internally bleeding. Its appears to be bleeding every now and then, but one of these bleeds or more than one bleed too close together could result in large blood loss. Birds only have a few mls of blood and die quickly from blood loss.

There is obviously an internal problem most likely located in the digestive tract and needs urgent medical attention from an avian vet.

The bird may die without it through blood loss or infection as the intestines contain bacteria which can make the bird very ill if they hit the blood stream.

This needs to be rectified by an AVIAN vet NOW.

The red you are seeing is called blood, and this bird will die without being examined, diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet ONLY. You will need to find an avian vet and even if you have to drive a ways, they are the only vets licensed and trained in the care of birds. The dog and cat vets do not know how to diagnose physical problems with birds, and they give the wrong meds because they do not know how to diagnose them. The meds either do nothing or kill the bird.

Take the time to work and find an avian vet within driving distance because if this is blood, and it sounds like it is, your bird will die from internal bleeding.
