Lorikeet with lame feet

This could be a nutritional problem. Or it could be toxin related, or other neurological problems. You need to have your bird looked at by an avian veterinarian immediately.

First of all, you'll need to take birds to an Avian Vet for a thorough examination to see if they can determine what caused the problem or if birds have any other physical problems. If the perches are too small or are plain dowels at your parent's home, then this will cause all kinds of foot and leg problems including severe arthritis. It sounds like there is something in the environment at your parent's home that is causing the problems since the other bird also went lame. Perches have to be natural branch perches made from safe woods, and they have to be the correct diameter for the bird's feet. You can find this information anywhere you buy the already made branch perches that come with hardware already on them.

I strongly suggest you also take a look at other factors including diet and other aspects of your parent's home especially what kind of perches they have to sit on. Too small perches make the birds have to curl their feet too tightly, and this becomes a muscle-spasm type situation that can be easily fixed by giving them the correct type of perches.

The Avian Vet is a must here as this could be caused from a toxin present in your parent's home or in the water supply that has gone unnoticed until now, so please take both birds to be examined by an Avian Vet in your driving area as soon as is possible.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
