losing balance and feet not gripping tight

by Missy

Our blue and gold macaw is just over a year old, for about the past month his feet don't seem to curl right all the time and they don't always grip well. It is like he just sits there. He has fallen over a couple of times. He eats well. Fresh fruits and vegetables. Nuts. seed and grains. I thought maybe I had not clipped his nails short enough but they have been longer. Can you give us any help?

B & G Macaw grip

The diet you describe is inadequate for a macaw (or any bird). The items you mention are treat foods and do not provide complete and balanced nutrition. You need to be feeding 80% pellets and 20% treats.

The best pellet to feed is Harrison's. The problem you describe could be related to poor nutrition in several ways ? low protein, low calcium, and high fat levels in the diet.

I recommend that you change his diet and take him to see an avian veterinarian for a complete work up to diagnose his problem.

If you need help getting your bird to eat pellets, please read the article I wrote on Switching Birds to Pellets.
