My cuckatoo umbrella lost his voice Monday and today, Friday, he almost sounds like he is coughing. Could it be something serious?

Yes, the disease Dr. B spoke of is serious, and your bird will die from it if left untreated. Anytime you experience something like this with your bird, please get into see the Avian Vet immediately. Avian Vet, not dog and cat vet. Dog and cat vets are not licensed and trained to treat birds and will make matters worse and not better. Birds are unique in that they have NO fat, and their bones are hollow. Someone not trained to care for them can easily give an overdose of medications which can kill your bird. A bird's kidneys and liver have to process all overdoses since there is no fat for it to go into and be slowly dispersed like in humans.

I hope you are not the same people who wrote in several weeks ago with this problem because you were instructed then to take your bird to an Avian Vet immediately, and there is nothing else you can do at this point except watch your bird die because you are not providing him medical services which is against the law.

Let us know what the Avian vet has to say, and thanks for writing,
Linda

Yes, it could be serious. Dr B has answered this before: "This could be a serious problem. One of the only things I am aware of that causes voice change is Aspergillus infection in the trachea. ... He should be seen by an avian specialist as soon as possible."
