Love Bird Attacked

by Megan
(Cape Town, South Africa)

Our love bird was in his cage and somehow, we think a cat must of jumped onto the cage or something, but it seems as though a claw went through his head. His beak is a greyish colour and his face by his nasal holes is swollen and full of blood. I only found out today, but my parents found him hurt yesterday!

he keeps trying to scratch and he hasnt eaten all day, he managed to drink a little water, but it came back up again! He also pooped, it seems to be, blood, we think its because he digested some?
We dont have avian vets here! We only have normal vets, and they wont be able to help.

All advice and help will be appreciated.

Thank you

I hate to tell you this but if you don't get help from an avian vet, your lovebird will die. Cat scratches and bites are VERY toxic to a bird.

Maybe you can look for an avian vet as close to you, you can find and give them a call and hopefully they can prescribe an antibiotic.

Good luck and please keep us posted.

Bird attacked by cat

I am very sorry, I wish there were something that could be suggested, but your bird really needs to be examined and treated by an avian vet. As far as I know, there is not anything sold over the counter for this situation.

Please do a search on the link at the top of our Find an Avian Vet page just in case there is an avian vet there that you can at least call.
