Love bird Bites toenail off

by Kelly
(Canberra ACT Australia)

Hi. i have just bought 2 lovebirds 4 days ago and today have noticed that 1 of them bites at one toenail to the point the toenail is missing. There doesn't seem to be be any infection of discharge, but can you tell me if there is anything i can do, or if this is somewhat normal behaviour?. Thanks.

I had a Kakariki which used to bite all his nail tips but only to shorten them himself.
I had never seen this before or since as long as he isn't biting into the quick & making it bleed then I wouldn't worry.

This is not normal behavior. It could be a medical problem or anxiety. I recommend that you have them examined by an avian veterinarian.
