Love Bird - Eating Habits

by Nicole S.
(Miami, FL USA)

I feed my bird a mixture of pellets and seeds. She will eat all her seeds in the morning and leave all the pellets. Should I feed her more seeds if this is what she likes? I'm scared she is still hungry after eating everything in the morning. Should I feed her again in the afternoon?

Love Bird - Eating Habits

You want your bird to eat more organic pellets than seeds. In fact, you want to get her off seeds entirely or at least until she starts eating and liking the pellets better. Here is a link on how to go about changing a bird from seed diet to organic pellets written by an Avian Vet:

Switching Birds To Pellets article

The organic pellets can be found here, and there are several kinds. The reason for organic pellets is they have no dyes, sugar, preservatives and/or pesticide residue. ZuPreem and Lafaeber's have all the above and are not healthy for your bird. Harrisons is the best organic pellet, and you may wish to get some of it as well as a couple others so your bird has more variety in texture and shape. This could help in the changeover. Follow the below directions and this will take a while, so don't be in a hurry, and don't allow your bird to tell you what it is going to eat. In the end, birds are like small children who would eat candy all day if their parents allowed this. See your bird in this same way and continue with your commitment to change her over from seeds to a healthy pellet diet as it will add years of good health to her life, and provide a happier bird for you to enjoy.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
