Love bird - Head bobbing

by Tracey
(Australia)

Hi, My love birds is about 8 months old now and a while ago he started doing this strange this with his head. He bobs his head and it kind of looks like he's vomitting, but nothing actually comes out. Otherwise he's completley fine and healthy. I was just wondering if why he was doing it and if it is something to be concerned about? Thanks

Bird bobbing head
by: The Avian Vet

This could be regurgitation. It could be behavioral, which is common in lovebirds. They do this as a sign of affection. It could also be regurgitation from a medical cause. My suggestion is to have your bird examined by an avian veterinarian to be sure that it is not a medical problem. Birds should see a veterinarian at least annually for check ups and vaccinations anyway.

Love bird - Head bobbing
by: Linda

Head bobbing is a form of showing affection as birds start reaching sexual maturity. They do this with a favorite toy or person, and it is normal. Sometimes, even a bit of processed food will come out which is still within the realm of normal.

If, however, you start seeing any undigested food coming up, this is a major problem and means the bird needs to be seen by an Avian Vet immediately as it indicates an infection. Food is partially digested in the crop which is how mother birds can feed their young and is called crop milk. If whole pieces of undigested food is seen in this regurgitation, it is serious, and it can point to a viral infection and needs the immediate attention of an Avian Vet.

If you have not taken your bird to be examined by an Avian Vet since you've had him or in the last year, it is time for an exam to look for any kind of infections and to have routine bloodwork done to see how organs are functioning. We recommend once a year exams because birds tend to cover illnesses for as long as they can. Once they can no longer cover up being sick, they are very sick, and it is hard to get them back to health. It takes far longer to bring a sick bird back to health than it does to keep them healthy with high quality organic pelleted diet and regular once a year visits to Avian Vet.

Sometimes, Avian Vets work in regular dog and cat practices, so your local phone book would be a good source as to where you can find an Avian Vet. The organic pellets are found here, and below is a link about how to change from seeds to pellets written by an Avian Vet. The change takes time, so follow the instructions given carefully. Never starve a bird for any reason because birds cannot go very long without food or water and any changes in diet need to be carefully monitored. BEFORE beginning any dietary changes, please have bird thoroughly examined by Avian Vet to make sure there are no physical problems because an "at risk" bird should not be forced to go through changes like this.
