Love Bird still not eating

In June I made a comment about my love bird not weaning.. Well It is almost a year old and still he wont eat anything other than formula.
I have another bird with him to learn by immitation. that dosent work either.
I try to give him banana by hand or peanut butter on my finger, he pecks a little bit but dosent really eat it..
He has millet hanging in the cage and only plays with it.
I am thinking that he is brain damaged, as he was badly pecked on the head when a baby, which is why I got into this situation in the first place. There were 2 of them, but I had no trouble with the other one that is now returned to the aviary. Now he is bonded to me and follows me everywhere like a little duck, when I let him out of the cage, but he wont eat, I have tried restriction and that dosent work either, as he almost died.. His beak is normal. i either feed him or he will die.But this is very trying 3 times a day.
Has anyone else been through this, you are much more experienced than I am..Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pam,

I am in the same boat as you i have a hand rised blue black masked lovebird who will be two in October and he still gets hand fed,i to have had problems weaning him, i cant stop feeding him because he will get really thin and i dont want him to die.Does he eat his fornula by himself (like out of a little bowl)? or do you have to hand feed him? Maybe try leaving his food in a shallow little bowl so that he can pick at it,maybe try this on his lunch time feeds, just so that he gets used to picking and not relying on you completely) My birds does however nibble on seed and some veg but not enought to fill him,I agree to taking him to a Avian vet as there might be an underlying problem. Also make sure that the hand mix is good quality,im using Roudy Bush formular 3 and i also mix in Paswells egg and biscuit to make it a bit more couarse.he mite also need a vitim suppliment if he is not eating fruit and veg.Im sorry i cant give you any other advise on weaning but if you or any one has any tips please let me know too.

Love Bird still not eating

For one thing, if you have not taken this bird to an Avian Vet, that is part of the reason he won't wean. Your bird sounds like he is sick, and until he is diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet, he won't get any better.

The diet to wean him onto is an organic pelleted diet, and Tracie carries several kinds on this website. The peanut butter is not a good food to even try to feed him as it is high in fat and salt.

How you wean a baby bird is a process, and it starts with a trip to a licensed, trained Avian Vet. Your little bird sounds like he is sick, and he will most likely die without treatment. I believe I gave you some instruction for weaning, and it did not include peanut butter and DID include organic high quality pellets. If he is sick, nothing will work. He is barely staying alive as it is with the syringe feedings. Your tone sounds like you are tired of taking care of him, and I think you're dealing with a poor sick bird here who needs medical help. Please get him some help.

Once he is well enough, you can then start the weaning process. A sick bird will not wean, or play or be hungry. He likes the syringe because he does not have to do anything as he does not feel like doing anything.

PLEASE TAKE YOUR BIRD TO SEE AN AVIAN VET AS QUICKLY AS IS POSSIBLE. THIS IS NOT YOUR BIRD'S FAULT THAT HE IS SICK, AND THE LONGER YOU WAIT THE NEARER TO DEATH HE WILL BE.

Linda
