Lovebird Chick-- Lump on head

by Valerie
(Orlando, FL, USA)

Today I found a "surprise" masked/Fischer's lovebird chick. S/he is probably about 5 weeks old. What caught my attention is a swelling on the side of its head. I thought maybe an insect bite. When I caught her, there was no play in the lump, I tried shifting it to see if it was a skin issue or abscess. It seems solid, and starts under her ear.

I have every intention of taking her to an avian specialist, but wonder if I could have a few suggestions of what to expect them to find. I have had lovebirds since 2000, and never had a deformed chick.

Also, the chick had staining around its nares which indicates to me a respiratory issue, and the eye on the side with the lump (left side) has a slight puffy appearance.

Thanks!

Lovebird with lump on head

This sounds like it could be a sinus infection. It is not likely to be a cancerous tumor because of age, but it has been documented in young birds.

The origin of the lump is probably related to the infection the baby has. Also, if this baby is being kept in close proximity to other babies, they all will have whatever infection this one has or it is the usual scenario anyway.

As for what Avian Vet will find, that will be unknown to us or you until they have tested a scraping of the lump plus tested for either viral or bacterial infection.

Let us know what Avian Vet finds, and we will be awiting your reply. Thanks for writing and wish we could be of more help,

Linda
