Lovebird Chick's Eye

Partially opened right eye

Partially opened right eye

I'm hand-raising two 3 week old fischer's lovebirds and one of them seems to have something wrong with one of its eyes. The right eye looks as though it's still only part way through opening, but it's been this way for a few days now and the left eye's fully opened already.

It doesn't seem to be affecting the chick in any way, it's perfectly healthy, feeding fine, can still see enough etc, but it just looks a little odd. I've tried to take a photo, which I've uploaded, but it's not as clear on film. I'm just curious to know if it's a natural deformity, something that'll fix on its own, or of if there's anything I can do to help it open the rest of the way.

There could be any one of a number of problems that cause this eye problem. I recommend that you have it examined by an avian veterinarian.

You need to take all the babies into be examined by an Avian Vet in your driving area because this sounds like a bacterial infection which is highly contageous and if one has it then so do the others.Give NO over the counter meds because until avian vet has diagnosed what kind of infection this is, no meds can be prescribed or used as the wrong meds in wrong dosage will kill the babies outright. Your babies will not last long with infections and even though they may appear healthy, they are not and will start showing this soon and it will be too late.

Let us know what avian vet has to say and thanks for writing,
Linda
