Lovebird molted now flys too high and acts weird

by Shelly Caldwell
(Ewa Beach, Hawaii)

My 8 year old male lovebird "Ipo" (means sweetheart in Hawaiian), molted recently but a few nights ago he was acting crazy in his cage throwing himself around. He kept jumping around fast and banging his bell and himself. It woke me up and I held him calming him down that night thinking he had a bad dream. Now he is flying like a helicopter. He goes way too high and his flying is off. He used to be a strong flyer and accurate. I had lovebirds before but never had this problem.

Do birds have age related flying issues? I hope you can tell me whats wrong with my baby Ipo. I love the bird so much and he is eating okay.

Bird flying strange
by: The Avian Vet

It sounds like he had a night fright. Use a night light near his cage to help prevent this in the future. He may have lost some primary feathers in his thrashing which will affect his flight ability. Take him to see an avian veterinarian to be sure he is ok.
