Lovebird not eating

by Samantha

The lovebird is 12 weeks old and has been fed formula since he was 5 days old. We tried to wean him off the formula, but he doesn't want to take seeds. If he's not fed formula, he eats nothing and has become very thin now as well, very light. The crop empties properly. What can I do to make him eat his seed?

i to had a lovebird hatch last year with a splayed leg i used a makeup sponge with two slits in for the legs to go through worked well on one leg but not the other however precious is now a yr old and doing great he can get around play with toys and climb just like a regular lovebird the only difference being he is kept inside and his cage has a small rubber mat on the bottom of his cage the type you get to stop objects slipping around they are very thin and cheap easily washed and give precious the traction he needs to move without slipping i hope it all goes well with your little bundle

by: Mandy

Hi I have aprox a 1 month old love bird that has one splade leg. it eats every 4-5 hours and between 1/2-3/4 teaspoon of formula from a syringe. It gets around but not that great. I am trying the tie the leg thing but it just gets out of it. I also want to know when I can wean it. it was with its parents but they were always pushing out of the box so i took it out and am now hand feeding it. the birds eats well and chirps flaps the wings but has the one bum leg. any help would be great I will not let this little thing pass away. it has most of its feathers you can see baby fuz under some near the rear and it does not have all the feathers by its wings on top please help.

Love Bird wont wean
by: Pam

My love bird is 16 weeks old and will eat nothing except Exact formula in a syringe. I tried reducing it but he wont eat anything and I almost lost him last saturday.. However he survived, I think that he must have 9 lives. I ended up feeding him as he was attacked as a fledgling in an aviary and badly picked around the head and eye, I have photos..
However since last sat episode I have been feeding him 3 times a day again to build him up as he was so thin, do you think that i should add baby foods to the formula? I am open for any advice on this

Dieting Lovebird
by: Kralice4u

One thing about weaning a baby bird: You should CUT BACK on the amount of formula you are giving him/her and offer seeds, fruit, pellets at the same time. Please do not just cut him off the formula. This may sound bizaar, but one thing I have tried (with my Conur named Chaos) is to pretend like I am really enjoying the seeds or pellets and his curiosity gets the best of him. He just has to try it. Hopefully this will work for your baby as well!

Seed tree
by: Linda

What I have done in the past is put a seed tree on the bottom of the cage or hang it where the baby is staying most of the time. I have fed a baby bird up to 6 mths old before I could wean her totally off the formula. Possibly it has become so attached to U, thinking U R the Mom and just wants the precious time, it is just not ready to give it up yet. Hope this helps.
