Lovebird Red irritated Skin

by MJW
(Ocala, Fl)

I have 2 lovebirds, about 8 yrs old. One is fine, the other one seems to get red skin under its feathers a couple times a year. It comes and goes. This time, it looks very irritated, They live outside in their cage, (In Fl) great ventilation, what could be causing this?

Bird with red skin
by: The Avian Vet

Redness can come from infection with bacteria, yeast, or viruses. It can also be a normal color when the feathers are missing under the wing. Many lovebirds pluck under their wings seasonally and this may be what you are seeing. I recommend that you have your bird examined by an avian veterinarian. If this is an infection it can be very difficult to treat, so get at it soon.

Lovebird with irritated skin

Dr B will eventually answer this, but it may be more than a week due to his busy schedule with teaching and active practice.

I suggest you Find an Avian Vet to examine your birds in person, because it is unlikely that Dr B can determine what this is without examining the bird in person.
