lovebird with broken toe nail

Hi everyone, I went to pick up my bird from her cage and i noticed that her left leg was very week and could it was difficult for her to grip my finger. I looked carefully and noticed that one of her nails had almost broken halfway off (still attached) but when i go to touch it gently, my bird moves her foot away as if it's tender.

Does anyone know if this will pass? It is just the tip of her nail that chipped but it seems to be causing her discomfort. Is there anything i can do? she is still climbing (as much as she can) to her food and water but has difficulty with landing. Any information would be much appreciated.

i have the same problem with my green quaker bird but its whole nail is cut and its bleeding and it kant move what do i do

Editor's note: Take it to an avian vet asap, or call a breeder in your area for help. In the future, keep a Bird First Aid Kit on hand so that you can care for your bird until you can get the bird to an avian vet.

Thank you. I did just that and had her nails trimmed and she's up and kicking again! Thanks for the advice!

Broken Nail

Take your bird to an Avian Vet as soon as you can so they can trim this nail off before she pulls it off and bleeds to death. Birds have to have their nails and sometimes beaks trimmed every so often to keep these accidents from happening. We take ours in every 4-5 months and vet clips nails and beaks.

So, make an appointment right away and take her in. Make sure you take her to an Avian vet as regular vets are not licensed to treat birds and can actually hurt them because they are not trained to know how to treat them.
